Janky Books is a collaborative bookbinding project with Joe de Weijer. Janky Books are artist sketchbooks designed to defy the fear of not being good enough, challenge the paralysing anxiety of ruining a brand new sketchbook. Handmade out of pure (rehabilitated) garbage, these friendly sketchbooks will do you no harm.

The covers are made out of grocery cardboard boxes, and committing to using recycled materials, the paper is Fenner’s Redeem, unbleached and 100% recycled. Making the Janky Books is an exercise on found-design, proposing to highlight the overlooked efforts put in cardboard boxes that are normally handled almost exclusively by the producers, the delivery driver and the shop owners. The bind and non-standard sizes of the books are dictated by the found images.

The definition of janky by the Oxford Dictionary might be “of extremely poor or unreliable quality”, but we guarantee our products are at least structurally sound.
